Microsoft has released the KB5127936 preview cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2, bringing 41 changes that include improvements to File Explorer and Cloud rebuild. The update is a monthly preview that lets IT admins and users try new features and fixes before they reach the full user base on next month's Patch Tuesday. It is optional and does not contain security patches.
The October 2026 preview makes the File Explorer context menu faster and easier to customize, allowing users to pick which app extensions and commands appear and how they are arranged. Cloud rebuild gains the ability to reinstall Windows without USB media or a custom image, pulling an image and drivers directly from Windows Update even when Windows will not start. Microsoft also refreshed XBOX mode with a Gaming Task View that offers quick access to key system actions such as Power Options and Exit to Desktop through a new navigation bar.
Users can install KB5127936 from the Microsoft Update Catalog or through Settings, Windows Update, and "Check for Updates." Because the release is optional, users must click the "Download and install" link unless "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" is enabled, which prompts the operating system to install it automatically. Once installed, the non-security update moves Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 devices to builds 26200.9818 and 26300.9818, respectively.
Microsoft also reminded users that updated Secure Boot certificates are rolling out to replace the original 2011 certificates, which expire in late June 2027. The company first announced plans to refresh expiring Secure Boot certificates on eligible Windows 11 systems in January, after warning users and IT admins in November 2025 to update them before expiration.
According to a message center update, Microsoft warned that a limited number of consumer and business devices might experience one additional restart during installation with recent and upcoming Windows updates over the next few months. That one-time restart occurs after a Secure Boot certificate update is applied as part of the Secure Boot update process.
