Apple released tvOS 27.2 to the public alongside iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2, giving Apple TV owners their first software update since tvOS 27 arrived in September. Apple skipped version 27.1 entirely, so this marks the debut of the second point release in the current cycle. Apple TV updates typically ship without release notes, but a support document on Apple's website details the changes. The update brings no major overhauls, though it adds several features users can try.

The most visible addition affects the screen saver. Previously, Apple TV owners selected a single category of screensaver, and tvOS 27.2 introduces a Shuffle option that rotates through Aerials, Memories, Portraits and Snoopy. Each time the television enters screen saver mode, it displays a different selection. Users can also pick specific photos from an iPhone for the screensaver without sharing their entire photo library with the Apple TV, a change that matters in households where people don't want personal images appearing on the big screen.

FaceTime also receives updates in tvOS 27.2. FaceTime links make it easier to join a call directly from the Apple TV, though the call still relies on an iPhone as the webcam through the Continuity Camera feature. Calls now support third-party sign language interpreters and live captioning services. The same capability is available on iPhone, iPad and Mac through their respective updates.

On the hardware side, the new Apple TV 4K ships with a new Siri Remote that improves Find My support and includes a speaker for locating it. That feature requires the new device or at least the new remote, but tvOS 27.2 still improves the experience on earlier Apple TV models. The remote now appears in the Find My app, so users no longer need to open the TV Remote from the iPhone's Control Center to find it.

Select movies and shows in the Apple TV app now support ASL and BSL, which users can enable through the player controls or in Settings. The TV app also gained profile support on iPhone and iPad with iOS 27.2, and those profiles now sync with the Apple TV. Apple added new characters to the profile selection screen as well, a feature aimed at shared households and families with children. tvOS 27.2 also introduces a black-and-white Apple Music icon matching the one added in iOS 27.2.

The update is free and available for the second-generation Apple TV 4K, released in 2021, and later models. Users can install it by opening the Settings app, selecting System and choosing Software Update. Some features, such as setting up a surround sound system with two pairs of the new HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2nd generation, are exclusive to the new Apple TV 4K with the A19 chip that Apple introduced earlier this month.
