Microsoft is ending support for Copilot on all smart TVs, including the Copilot-enabled feature on LG TVs, according to a report by Windows Central. The change affects the AI assistant that LG and Samsung introduced on their latest smart TVs after announcing access at CES 2025. The news did not come through an official statement from LG, Samsung, or Microsoft.
Instead, the notice surfaced in an on-screen notification on an LG TV running webOS that belongs to Windows Central's Zac Bowden. The notification said Microsoft had recently decided to end support for Copilot functionality on all TVs and that the Copilot-enabled feature on the TV was no longer available and might stop functioning shortly. It did not give an exact end date, saying the feature is scheduled for discontinuation during 2026 and that a specific date is subject to Microsoft's timeline.
On Samsung and LG smart TVs, Copilot primarily served as an AI-powered companion that users could chat with, ask questions about what was currently on screen, or get recommendations for TV shows and movies. Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced a new Copilot super app that bundled multiple AI capabilities, including chat, agents, and coding, into a single interface. That move was part of a push to position Copilot more as a business and productivity tool and less as a digital companion.
The Copilot feature on LG TVs had already drawn criticism. Last December, LG faced backlash after an update to webOS added an unremovable Microsoft Copilot shortcut to its TVs that opened the AI assistant's web app in a browser. After many users expressed frustration online that the shortcut was added without their approval, LG decided to allow it to be deleted.
The end of Copilot on TVs leaves owners of Copilot-enabled LG and Samsung sets without the assistant's chat and recommendation features, though the notification does not say how quickly the functionality will stop working. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed the change beyond the message shown on the LG TV.
