Meta will stop releasing OS updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro in 2027, the company has confirmed. The move affects owners of the two virtual reality headsets, both of which Meta discontinued in 2024. The company framed the change as part of a broader shift toward newer hardware.
Meta said the Quest 3 and Quest 3S are now the baseline for its VR gamers. According to the company, those two headsets offer apps more performance headroom and include mixed reality built in. Meta also said apps built for the Quest 3 and 3S will carry forward to its upcoming Meta VR Glasses.
The Quest 2 and Quest Pro laid the foundation for Meta's VR platform, the company said, and millions of people still play on them. Meta said the newer headsets give developers more to work with. The company also noted that the Meta VR Glasses will run on the same OS and SDKs as the Quest 3 and 3S.
Meta launched the Quest 2 in 2020 and the Quest Pro in 2022. Both products were discontinued in 2024. The end of OS updates in 2027 means the two older headsets will no longer receive the software support that the newer models get.
The announcement comes ahead of the planned release of Meta's new VR Glasses, which are set to launch sometime in spring 2027. Meta positioned the Quest 3 and 3S as the hardware that will lead into that launch. The company did not say when in 2027 the final Quest 2 and Quest Pro updates would arrive.
For US owners of the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, the change sets a clear end point for OS support roughly three years after both devices were discontinued. Meta's statement did not address what happens to existing apps on the older headsets after updates stop.
Meta has not announced a specific date for the final update beyond the 2027 timeframe.
