Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on Monday, bringing a new Siri AI assistant, improvements to the Liquid Glass interface, and performance gains to Mac users. The update runs on all Macs equipped with Apple Silicon, but it does not support Intel-based Macs. Apple shipped its last major update for Intel Macs last year with macOS Tahoe, making Golden Gate the first release to leave that hardware behind.

Siri AI stands out as the most significant addition in macOS 27. According to Apple, the assistant can answer questions, search across personal context such as photos and emails, and carry out actions inside apps including Messages and Reminders. A new dedicated Siri app stores a record of user chats so they can be referenced later. The feature will launch first as a beta and will be available only in English.

The Liquid Glass design language also receives changes in this release. Apple says the update delivers uniform refraction and improved contrast across the interface. A new slider lets users adjust how opaque or transparent Liquid Glass elements appear. Apple also standardized window corner radii, a change that addresses a long-running inconsistency in the look of Mac windows.

The release continues Apple's annual cycle of major Mac operating system updates, which typically arrive in the fall. This year's version marks a turning point for hardware support, since Apple Silicon is now the only supported platform. Owners of Intel Macs are limited to macOS Tahoe, which Apple delivered last year as their final major upgrade.

Siri AI's staged rollout mirrors the approach Apple has taken with other recent features, offering functionality first in beta and in a single language before expanding. The personal-context search capabilities tie the assistant to data stored on the device and in Apple's apps, an area where the company has faced scrutiny over privacy practices. The dedicated chat archive gives users a way to revisit earlier interactions with the assistant.

For US consumers, the practical effect is that anyone with an Apple Silicon Mac can install macOS 27 Golden Gate now, while Intel Mac users cannot. Those users will need to rely on macOS Tahoe for the foreseeable future. The Siri AI beta and its English-only availability apply equally to US customers, who are not receiving broader language support at launch than users elsewhere.
