Leaked images indicate Amazon's next entry-level Kindle will arrive with a redesigned body and a wider selection of colors than the current model. The current entry-level Kindle, introduced in 2024, is sold in black and matcha green. That model's upgrades over its predecessor were limited to a brighter backlight, a dark mode, and faster page turns. According to the leaked images, the next version will make more noticeable changes to the hardware.
One of the more significant changes shown in the images is the relocation of the power button. On the current entry-level Kindle, the button sits on the bottom of the device. The leaked images place it on the top right edge, a position that could reduce the chance of users accidentally putting the e-reader to sleep when they rest it on something while reading.
The images also show more rounded corners around the screen. WinFuture speculates that multiple versions could be offered with different display features, based on images that appear to show the e-reader with a slightly recessed E Ink panel. The leaks do not indicate which E Ink screen the device will use.
Other details remain unknown, including storage capacity, battery life, and pricing. The 2024 version of the basic Kindle debuted at $109.99, but Amazon raised the price to $149.99 last month, citing significant increases in memory and storage component costs.
Amazon has a pattern of introducing new Kindle models a few months before the holiday shopping season. The leaked images suggest this year's entry-level update will be larger than the 2024 refresh.
