Honor introduced the Magic 9 series in China today, led by the Magic 9 Pro Max, which the company is positioning around a redesigned camera system and a very large battery. The launch marks Honor's first flagship debut, apart from its Robot Phone, since it revealed a partnership with the camera company Arri. An international release has been confirmed by Honor, though the company has not said when it will happen.
The Arri collaboration shapes both the look and the capabilities of the Magic 9 Pro Max. Its camera island draws on the three-lens turret design that first appeared in the 1937 Arriflex 35, and it includes a knurled texture around the main lens. Arri also contributed shooting in Arri LogC3, 14 preset Arri Look LUTs, access to Arri's larger library of official and third-party LUTs, and support for the APV 10-bit 4:2:2 codec.
The camera array itself pairs a 200-megapixel main lens using a 1/1.28-inch-type sensor with a 3.5x telephoto that carries the same resolution and a 1/1.4-inch sensor. A 50-megapixel ultrawide lens is also included, but it does not support all of the Arri Cinema Mode features. Honor has added a cinema-grade directional microphone for video recording, along with a square-format selfie camera that can capture in landscape or portrait, similar to Apple's Center Stage.
Honor says the wider camera island is more space-efficient, which freed room for an 8,800mAh battery with up to 40 percent silicon content. The Magic 9 Pro Max runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Asked why Honor chose the Extreme version when the phone does not support the 8K60 or 4K240 video recording that chip enables, the company said the decision was about delivering a complete and consistent flagship experience rather than chasing a single benchmark result.
The Magic 9 series is available in China starting today, and buyers there are the first to get the Pro Max. For US consumers, the practical question is timing: Honor has said an international launch is coming, but it has not disclosed a date. The Arri branding and the battery size are the two features Honor is leaning on most heavily as it takes the Magic 9 Pro Max to market.
