Bose has released a new pair of wired earbuds, marking its first return to the category in 11 years. The Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds arrive as wired headphones experience a resurgence in the United States, with sales rising for the first time in five years. Raza Haider, Bose's president of consumer audio, said he noticed the trend after dropping his teenager off at college last year and seeing wired earbuds widely in use. The new earbuds are designed around the simplicity of wired audio. A central control panel carries volume up and volume down buttons along with a play, pause, and noise-canceling mode switch. The panel is somewhat heavy and weighs down the cable, which creates tension on the earbuds and can feel annoying compared with wireless earbuds. The cable is thick and has a premium feel but tends to become tangled inside the included soft pouch.
The earbuds include removable silicone wing-tip stabilizers, and the box contains additional ear tip and stabilizer sizes for fitting. They are available in black, white, and a limited-edition mint color. Shipping begins October 15, and preorders opened at Bose and Best Buy.
Bose's return to wired headphones comes even though wired earbuds never fully disappeared from the market.
