Crunchyroll is expanding its reach to cars, with its anime streaming service beginning to appear on the Appning app store for in-vehicle infotainment systems. The move will make the platform available directly in connected car environments across major global regions, including North America, Asia, Australia, Europe, India, and Latin America. For US consumers, this means access to anime in vehicles from a wide range of automakers that support the Appning platform.
Appning is already integrated into cars from more than 40 brands, including BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen Group, Mini, Lotus, and SAIC Motor. According to Appning, Crunchyroll is currently accessible in BMW vehicles, with plans to add support for additional car models in the future. The service is not headed to every upcoming vehicle, however, as it will not appear in the Afeela 1, the car developed by Crunchyroll鈥檚 parent company Sony in partnership with Honda, because that project was scrapped several months ago.
Crunchyroll confirmed the availability through an announcement made on LinkedIn. The company stated that, via Appning, its content library will be offered directly within connected car environments in the listed regions. This integration is part of a broader trend of streaming video apps becoming standard features on modern car infotainment systems.
As with most video streaming in vehicles, playback is expected to function only while the car is parked, a common safety measure for such systems. This restriction applies to Crunchyroll as it joins other streaming services in the automotive space. The setup is designed to prevent drivers from watching shows while on the road, which would be unsafe.
The inclusion of Crunchyroll on Appning gives subscribers another venue for watching anime, complementing existing platforms like phones, tablets, and smart TVs. The service鈥檚 catalog includes popular titles such as Dan Da Dan and Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers. While the rollout begins with BMW, the broader availability through Appning鈥檚 extensive automaker partnerships suggests wider adoption is planned.
