A Reddit user going by u/esketitethan has uncovered what appear to be major features of Microsoft's next Xbox Elite controller by examining the backend of the Xbox Design Lab, according to a post reviewed by Engadget. The tool is Microsoft's online service that lets gamers customize Elite Series 2 and other controllers. The findings point to a successor for the Elite Controller Series 2, which launched seven years ago. The leaker identified the device by the codename Edessa, tied to an accessory and customization product called Beatrice.
According to the post, the Xbox Design Lab backend contained configuration records and 16 actual 3D component models for the controller. Those sources were listed in the Reddit post but appear to have since been removed. The leaker said the Elite Controller 3 will offer Hall-effect and TMR sticks, which suggests buyers will have a choice of magnetic sensing technology and stick resistance. The current Elite controller uses potentiometer analog sticks, which are known to drift.
The leak also describes upgraded haptics using advanced haptics (VCAs) motors. That could mean the controller adopts voice-coil haptics and trigger vibration similar to the PlayStation 5 DualSense, instead of the rumble motors used previously.
Other reported features include performance D-pads with standard, cross and grippy or faceted choices. The controller is said to include a dedicated audio scroll wheel and faceplate options spanning metal, named designs, extensive colors and engraving. The leak further lists low-friction and silent sticks, additional paddle designs covering standard, classic and doublewide paddles, and 27 mapped topper and paddle configurations.
Four SKU combinations are described, including Elite Complete and Elite Base, both with and without motors.
The report cautions that the leak should be treated with significant skepticism, particularly because the source files are no longer visible. Some Reddit users in the thread expressed doubt that Microsoft would manufacture its own drift-free Hall-effect joysticks, while others criticized the continued absence of a built-in gyro. Earlier leaks and the accidental sale of a seemingly real device suggest the Elite Controller 3 could arrive soon, so official details may emerge shortly. The story matters to US gamers who buy Xbox hardware and accessories, since any change to stick technology, haptics and customization options would shape what they can purchase.
