Walmart and Wing, the drone delivery company owned by Alphabet, have announced that they will begin operating in the Denver and Seattle metropolitan areas in 2027. The two companies intend to expand their aerial delivery partnership beyond its current footprint. The expansion is part of a broader plan to eventually offer delivery by air from more than 270 Walmart stores across the United States.
Wing and Walmart currently offer drone deliveries in five metropolitan areas: Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Dallas - Fort Worth; Houston; and Orlando, Florida. The companies are aiming to add fourteen other destinations, a list that includes Miami, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Denver and Seattle are the newest additions to that expansion plan, with service set to begin in 2027.
The service is tied to Walmart's existing ordering systems. If a Walmart order is eligible for drone delivery, customers will see that option on the retailer's app or website. Consumers can also place orders through Wing's app. The drones themselves can travel at up to 60 mph and carry a payload weighing as much as five pounds.
The announcement from Walmart and Wing comes just days after DoorDash revealed more details about its own drone service. DoorDash Air will debut in northern California with partners including Chipotle and Popeyes. The timing places the Wing and Walmart expansion within a broader push by delivery and retail companies to develop aerial delivery options for US consumers.
For Walmart, the drone program represents an extension of its efforts to reach customers through alternatives to traditional ground delivery. Wing, which is owned by Alphabet, operates the aircraft and the delivery platform for the partnership. Neither company disclosed financial terms or a more specific launch date within 2027 for the Denver and Seattle markets.
