The VESA dimensions specify the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of the television. Checking the exact TV model’s specifications is more dependable than guessing based on the display's diagonal measurement. Consumers should therefore consult their television's manual or manufacturer listing to pin down the correct pattern.
Shoppers do not need to find a mount labeled only for their TV’s exact VESA size, as many brackets support several different patterns. The TV’s pattern simply needs to appear on the mount’s list of supported configurations. That flexibility means a single wall bracket can often serve multiple televisions, saving owners from buying a new mount when they upgrade their set. Still, the listed VESA size is not the only factor to verify.
If the specification is not available, the mounting holes can be measured manually. The distance is taken from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the corresponding hole horizontally, then the same measurement is done vertically. The result is written as horizontal × vertical, expressed in millimeters. For example, holes 400mm apart horizontally and 200mm apart vertically produce a 400 × 200 VESA pattern, and measuring in millimeters ensures a direct comparison with the mount’s listed specs.
The mount’s weight limit also needs to be checked against the weight of the television. A bracket can be perfectly matched to the VESA pattern and still be unsafe for a TV that exceeds its maximum load. The VESA compatibility does not guarantee the bracket can handle the set’s mass, so owners must compare the mount’s rated capacity with the TV’s actual weight before installation.
Additionally, VESA compatibility says nothing about how the bracket attaches to the wall or which screws the TV requires. Once the pattern and weight rating are confirmed, owners should use the TV manufacturer’s instructions to identify the proper mounting screws. The mount manufacturer’s instructions should be followed for securing the bracket to the wall, as the VESA standard addresses the hole spacing on the TV, not the wall-side hardware.
