Apple's next high-end MacBook Pro, which is expected to bring both a touchscreen and an OLED display, is also said to be notably lighter than the models it will replace. The report comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has covered the company's hardware plans. The laptop is still expected to arrive by next month.
Gurman said the touchscreen MacBook Pro with OLED is on track to launch next month. Apple is also expected to introduce its first iPad mini with an OLED screen at the same time. The current MacBook Pro lineup weighs 3.4 pounds in its 14-inch configuration and as much as 4.7 pounds in the 16-inch version, giving buyers a baseline for how much lighter the new model may be.
How the components inside the touchscreen MacBook Pro will be laid out is not yet known. Gurman has previously reported that the machine will use the existing higher-end M5 chips rather than the M7 chips expected to arrive in early 2027. That would put the new laptop on Apple's current silicon rather than its next generation.
The release would mark a significant hardware moment for John Ternus, who recently took over as Apple's CEO. Gurman said Ternus's background as a hardware engineer could shift the company's emphasis back toward product design, in contrast with his predecessor, whose reputation centered on supply chain and logistics. Gurman added that one of Ternus's first priorities as CEO was rebuilding Apple's design teams, which now report directly to him.
The reported weight reduction matters for US buyers who carry a laptop between home, office and travel, since the 16-inch MacBook Pro has long been one of the heavier machines in its class. A touchscreen and OLED panel would also be firsts for the MacBook Pro line, which has so far shipped without touch input. Apple has not confirmed the product, the timing or the specifications described in the report.
The OLED iPad mini would extend the display technology to Apple's smallest tablet for the first time. Together, the two launches would give the company a pair of OLED devices across its laptop and tablet lines. Neither Apple nor Gurman has indicated a price for either product.
