Tesla's vehicle deliveries fell in the third quarter of 2026, a decline that followed a rush by customers to claim expiring federal tax credits last year. The company said it delivered 486,532 vehicles to customers between July and September, down about 2.1 percent from the 497,099 vehicles it delivered in the third quarter of 2025. For Tesla, which sells directly to consumers, deliveries serve as a proxy for sales.
The delivery total included 481,166 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, along with the remainder in other vehicles. Tesla also reported producing 464,391 vehicles during the quarter, including 457,387 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and 7,004 other vehicles such as the Cybertruck, Cybercab, and Tesla Semi. Production rose about 3.8 percent from the 447,450 vehicles built in the same period of 2025. The company discontinued the Model S and X earlier this year.
The sales decline had been widely anticipated after the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles expired on September 30, 2025. Elon Musk said the company faced "a few rough quarters" because of the expiring incentive and other macroeconomic factors. The company-compiled sell-side analyst consensus had estimated 461,974 vehicle deliveries for the quarter.
Musk has said he expects Tesla to recover as its artificial intelligence plans progress, pointing to robotaxis and humanoid robots. The July launch of the steering-wheel and pedal-less Cybercab in Austin offered one example of that direction. Musk also predicted that half of the US population would have access to Tesla's robotaxis by the end of 2025, a projection that proved incorrect.
In the prior quarter, Tesla reported that its sales were up 25 percent year over year, and Wall Street investors had expected the company to report sales of 463,000 vehicles for that period. The quarterly report lands during a turbulent stretch for Tesla. The company drew positive coverage for the re-launch of the Semi and Cybercab, a rebound in European sales, and a gain in EV market share in the United States. It also faced negative headlines over a delay to the next-generation Roadster reveal and a federal investigation into the Cybercab launch.
