Sennheiser has announced the Momentum True Wireless 5, the next version of its flagship earbuds, with a design focused on sustainability that allows users to replace the batteries themselves. Both the earbuds and their charging case are accessible with a compact screwdriver, eliminating the need to cut through glue when the batteries stop holding a charge. The product will be available starting September 3rd for $299.95, the same price as the previous Momentum 4 model that launched in early 2024. Five metallic color options will be offered: lavender, copper, denim, graphite, and cream.

The replaceable battery design arrives as European sustainability regulations are set to take effect in early 2027, pushing manufacturers to make devices easier to repair. Sennheiser joins companies like Fender and Glorious that already offer over-ear headphones with swappable batteries, but such features have been slow to reach earbuds, which are typically assembled with glue to keep them small and lightweight. The Momentum 5 joins the Fairphone Fairbuds as one of the few earbud models where users can replace the batteries in the buds themselves. Other options, such as Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay Eleven earbuds from late 2024, also have replaceable batteries but require sending the device to a professional technician for the swap.

Beyond repairability, the Momentum 5 offers improved battery life, reaching up to 12 hours per charge on the earbuds alone, or up to 40 hours total with the charging case, which is now slimmer and Qi-compatible. The previous Momentum 4 topped out at 7.5 hours on the buds and up to 30 hours with the case. Sennheiser also redesigned the ear tips and revised the adaptive active noise cancellation system to improve noise canceling performance. The earbuds add support for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio with interactive head tracking.

Connectivity improvements include support for Bluetooth 6.0 and a "robust mode" designed to maintain stable wireless connections in environments with high interference. The company says the redesign also improves comfort, stability, and portability, though the longer lifespan from replaceable batteries is positioned as a key reason to upgrade. The Momentum 5’s launch price matches the prior generation, making the new features available without a cost increase for US consumers. The product is scheduled to hit the market in early September.
