Google’s newest smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 5, is now available at a starting price of $399, and a comparison with last year’s Pixel Watch 4 shows the upgrade comes down to speed and new AI features versus the older model’s lower price. For US consumers deciding between the two, the key differences are a faster processor, double the storage, and upgraded GPS on the new device, while battery life remains largely unchanged. The Pixel Watch 4, which launched at $349.99, remains a viable option for buyers who do not need the new AI tools and may see further discounts during major shopping events like Black Friday or Prime Day.
The Pixel Watch 5 runs on a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor, which Google says makes the watch 20 percent faster than the Pixel Watch 4. It also doubles the storage capacity to accommodate new on-device AI functions, including Raise to Talk and Smart Replies. These features allow the watch to proactively suggest responses in text conversations, such as pulling up a friend’s contact information when asked, and manage timers and alarms through voice commands using offline Gemini.
Google also improved the GPS on the Pixel Watch 5, claiming more accurate recorded pathways for outdoor runs, cycles, and walks. The company says this route-tracking performance exceeds that of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, positioning the $399 watch against rugged devices that typically cost at least twice as much. The Pixel Watch 4 does not get this GPS upgrade, but many of the software features arriving on the new model are expected to carry over to the older watch.
Battery capacity is nearly identical between the two generations. The 41mm Pixel Watch 5 has the same 325 mAh battery as the Pixel Watch 4, and both last around 30 hours with the always-on display enabled. The 45mm Pixel Watch 5 gains only 10 mAh over its predecessor, bringing its capacity to 465 mAh, which the comparison notes is a minor change.
The decision ultimately hinges on whether the faster processor and AI-driven features justify the premium. For users who mainly want a smartwatch for general activity and sleep tracking, the Pixel Watch 4’s lower price and similar battery life may make the older model the better value. The Pixel Watch 5 is the shinier option, but for many consumers, the marginal upgrades may not be worth the extra cost.
