Micron has announced a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM that it says is the first module of that capacity certified to run at 9200 MT/s while using standard 1.1V voltage. The module is aimed at servers running analytics, in-memory databases, simulations, virtualization and agentic AI, workloads that call for high-core-count processors and large amounts of memory. Micron says it will begin volume production in the second half of 2027 and will align that schedule with customer requirements. AMD and Intel are working with Micron to qualify the modules for their upcoming server platforms.

To build the 512GB module, Micron uses advanced packaging that stacks multiple DRAM dies vertically and links them with through-silicon vias. The company does not say which memory devices it uses or how many. Micron claims one 512GB RDIMM draws 16.0W, more than 60% less operating power than four 128GB modules, which it says total 44.2W. That gap suggests fairly advanced ICs are inside.

Micron is not the first to ship a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM; Samsung holds that distinction. Samsung formally introduced 512GB RDIMMs in 2021, and they have not become widespread even after AMD and Intel introduced processors with more than 100 cores. Micron's claimed advance is the 9200 MT/s data rate at 1.1V, which implies the use of its 16Gb DDR5-9200 devices made on its 1-gamma process using EUV lithography, a process Micron says consumes 20% less power than its predecessors.

Such modules are niche products today. As processors with 200 or more cores emerge, 512GB modules may become more relevant: 12TB of memory in a server running two 256-core CPUs works out to 24GB per core, which Micron argues no longer looks excessive for in-memory databases, analytics or caching. Micron says that in memory-constrained Spark Support Vector Machine analytics workloads, systems using 512GB modules can deliver up to 1.4 times the performance of configurations with 256GB DDR5 modules, though it does not disclose total memory in those systems. Micron also says the higher capacity can raise throughput and concurrency for memory-intensive database and caching applications such as RocksDB and Redis.

Price remains an open question. A 256GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM currently retails for around $19,000, and Micron's 512GB modules can be expected to cost significantly more than 256GB sticks, which would not help broad adoption.
