Apple AirPods owners who notice shortened listening time are running into the normal wear limits of lithium-ion batteries, a component that typically lasts roughly 300 to 500 charge cycles, or about two to three years, before significant degradation sets in. Buds that have not yet reached that stage may still fall short of Apple's own estimates. Apple rates AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation at four hours of listening with ANC on and five hours with it off.
Habits play a large role in how quickly power disappears. An earbud left outside its case keeps drawing power as long as it is connected to a device or searching for one, so returning the buds to the case after use reduces the drain. The case's own battery loses capacity with every charge cycle over time, even if the AirPods still reach 100 percent. Enabled features add strain as well, and Spatial Audio, while a full listening experience, is not energy-free.
Charging problems can also mimic battery failure. Dust or earwax on the small contact points inside the case can prevent the circuit from closing, leaving the earbuds uncharged even when they are seated. Because debris does not usually build up evenly, Apple instructs owners to check each AirPod's charge level on an iPhone while both sit in the charging case; blocked contacts tend to produce uneven readings such as one bud at 22 percent and the other at 65 percent.
Apple advises occasional cleaning with a lint-free cloth and warns against scraping the contacts with hard objects, since the contacts are delicate and easily damaged. The case can be wiped with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, kept away from the charging ports and allowed to dry fully before charging. Apple also recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in micellar water, especially on the meshes, followed by a distilled-water rinse.
A reset is another option. The steps vary by model, but the process is basic: place the AirPods in the case, go to Settings, then Bluetooth, then More Info, then Forget This Device, and follow Apple's model-specific instructions before reconnecting the buds as if they were new. Charge time and runtime can then be reassessed.
A full percentage does not indicate a healthy battery, since 100 percent after 368 charge cycles differs from 100 percent on a first charge cycle. Owners can extend runtime slightly by disabling unnecessary features; turning off Spatial Audio may add about 30 minutes on older AirPods. For new purchases, Apple's Optimized Battery Charging, found under Settings, then the AirPods, then Battery, learns a charging routine and reduces time spent fully charged. With AppleCare+ coverage, Apple provides battery service at no extra charge when the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity.
