Breville has introduced a countertop appliance that it says can produce pour-over coffee automatically from whole beans. The Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over is priced at $600 and is available now from Breville and Williams-Sonoma. The machine is aimed at drinkers who want the results of a manual pour-over without the manual steps.
The device separates itself from earlier automatic pour-over machines by building in a coffee grinder. Breville describes the grinder as using bespoke 40mm flat burrs. Ground coffee then collects in a conical dripper for brewing. The setup means users do not need a separate grinder to make a pour-over.
Water delivery is handled by an articulating spout that travels in a spiral pattern, which the company compares to the motion a barista uses when pouring by hand. Breville says the heating system brings water to the correct temperature in seconds and holds that temperature through the pour, keeping the brewing temperature consistent.
A built-in display and controls let users set the amount and strength of the coffee before brewing. The interface also supports saving custom recipes. An Advanced Edit mode gives access to the grinder, brew ratio, water temperature and the interval between pours. A Delayed Auto Start feature allows a brew to be scheduled for a chosen time, such as the morning.
Manual pour-overs generally require grinding beans to a consistent size, placing them in a filter and pouring water at set intervals. The Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over is designed to take over that entire sequence. The machine's combination of grinding, automated pouring and temperature control places it in the premium end of the home coffee market, where $600 buys a single appliance rather than the separate grinder, kettle and dripper that manual brewing involves.
For buyers focused on convenience, the new Breville model offers a way to make pour-over coffee part of a daily routine rather than a weekend project, provided they are willing to spend the money and give up the counter space. Breville notes that lower-priced automatic pour-over machines remain on the market. Those alternatives may produce comparable results, though they do not include a spiral pour or an integrated grinder. The Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over is available now through Breville and Williams-Sonoma.
