As millions of Americans adopt Meta’s AI glasses each year, the likelihood of being secretly recorded in public is rising, prompting bans in schools, courts, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Even DEF CON 2026 reportedly barred all smart glasses, telling attendees with prescription pairs to bring non-violating eyewear. Enforcement remains spotty, however, since spotting the devices often requires tech-savvy security staff, and compliance may depend on voluntary disclosure or bystanders speaking up.

Privacy advocates argue that bans alone cannot stop nonconsensual recording, especially without comprehensive consumer privacy laws. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has warned that Meta appears willing to make the technology more invasive to sell more glasses and outpace rivals. EFF staff technologist Cooper Quintin told Ars that future features like facial recognition could enable convincing deepfakes or nonconsensual intimate imagery of people unaware they are on camera, raising concerns beyond simple covert recording.

Meta’s only built-in safeguard, a tiny recording light, is nearly “useless” according to Quintin, since it can be covered with a sticker. The glasses have been used in immigration raids, to harass sex workers and retail workers, and in online videos showing bullying and pranks, suggesting the LED is “better than nothing, but not by much.” The Financial Times reported last month that Meta is testing “super sensing” AI glasses designed to capture a wearer’s every moment, with executives reportedly planning not to activate the LED during those sessions, making it harder for bystanders to know they are being recorded.

Meta recently deleted an unreleased facial recognition system from its smart-glasses app, which Wired and EFF revealed had been quietly installed on 50 million phones in June. It is unclear if Meta will reintroduce that feature, and the company did not respond to Ars’ request for comment. Digital rights experts have accused Meta of failing to consider civil rights and privacy implications when designing new features, though sources suggest execs may change plans if public backlash persists.

In response, hobbyist programmers have built apps that detect nearby smart glasses by scanning for the Bluetooth signals used to pair the devices with phones. One such app, Nearby Glasses, costs $2.99 on iOS and Android and has been downloaded more than 100,000 times from the Play Store, despite its developer warning that false positives are likely and that detection may fail due to obstacles like walls or human bodies. Another app, Antizuck Smart Glasses Scanner, charges $3 and has gained popularity, with a high school teacher calling it the “best $3 I’ve spent” out of concern that students could record classmates.

Quintin said these detector apps are not a perfect solution but can supplement bans by helping people check whether a rule is enforced or if a nearby device might start recording. He noted that current smart glasses are relatively easy to spot visually, but that may not always hold true as more stylish models appear. “You need to have the social construct around these being unwelcome, and you also need to be able to find when people are using these,” he said, adding that many people have a “deep revulsion” to being recorded without consent, which remains the biggest problem with the glasses.
