Google Gemini users can now create, preview and modify files without exiting the chatbot, Google said. The capability covers PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code. It became available to all Gemini users on October 29, 2026, the day Google announced it.

PDF previewing and editing work in both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. Every other file format is limited to the web version for now. Google had already let users generate and download files in Gemini earlier this year. The change is that those files can now be adjusted inside the app rather than elsewhere.

Documents can be expanded to full-screen mode for editing, according to Google. Users can also highlight text inside a file to ask Gemini questions about it or to instruct the chatbot to alter it. Google's example is selecting a table and asking Gemini to convert it into a graph.

Gemini could previously edit files through its integrations with Google's Workspace apps, including the Gemini bar in Google Docs. Anthropic introduced a competing feature earlier this year that lets users generate and edit documents and presentations inside Claude chats. The update puts direct file editing in Gemini alongside those Workspace integrations and Anthropic's offering.

The rollout is aimed at Gemini users in the US and elsewhere, with the web version carrying the full set of formats on day one. Mobile users get PDF support at launch. Google has not said when the remaining formats will reach mobile.
