Volvo is bringing back the plug-in hybrid version of its XC40 small SUV after discontinuing it roughly three years ago. The automaker announced the return on Sept. 10, 2026, saying the revived model will reach dealerships early next year with updated exterior styling, a redesigned interior, a larger infotainment screen, and a new safety suite built on added sensors and software.
The XC40 remains on sale in the US in its mild hybrid form, alongside the electric EX40, but the plug-in hybrid variant had been absent from the lineup. Volvo did not release details about the powertrain, engine options, electric motor, range, or battery capacity for the returning model, leaving open the question of how it will fare in a competitive hybrid market. The PHEV serves as a bridge for buyers who want improved gas mileage without committing to a fully electric vehicle, a role that carries added weight for Volvo after the company backed away from its pledge to sell only EVs by 2030.
Outside, the new XC40 adopts a fresh interpretation of Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, along with a revised front grille, bumper, hood, and front wings. The rear gets new lighting, a new bumper, and an upgraded tailgate. Buyers will also have a choice of diamond-cut wheels in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes.
Inside, Volvo enlarged the infotainment screen to 11.2 inches and raised its resolution, running the company's latest user interface, which was designed for faster navigation with fewer taps. Google's Gemini handles voice duties, using its AI to plan routes, locate specific places and detours, and manage messages. The cabin also gains an improved wireless phone charger and what Volvo describes as smart storage solutions.
On safety, the XC40 adds a software and sensor platform intended to deliver real-time collision avoidance, automated emergency steering, and automatic emergency braking. The hardware includes new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors, and new parking cameras. Those additions support new door opening alerts that warn occupants before they door passing cyclists, lane change assist, smoother lane following on long drives, and an optional 3D and 360-degree camera for low-speed maneuvering and parking.
Akhil Krishnan, Interim Lead for the 30 and 40 Series at Volvo Cars, said in a statement that the design, technology, and safety changes amount to the best version of the XC40 yet, and that the already popular model is positioned to remain one of the brand's best-selling cars for years to come.
