The FBI has attributed the theft of $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance customers to malicious actors from North Korea. The agency said the heist struck the exchange on or about October 29, 2026. The FBI refers to this specific North Korean malicious cyber activity as “TraderTraitor.”

In its statement, the FBI said North Korea was responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion USD in virtual assets from Binance. The agency offered few other details or evidence to support its conclusion.

The FBI said that, together with partners at the USSS and IRS-CI, it has observed TraderTraitor actors converting the stolen assets primarily into Ethereum (ETH). The agency expects those assets will then be further laundered through DeFi and instant swap services as the actors prepare them for further laundering stages.

Binance reopened customer withdrawals today, after freezing them in the immediate aftermath of the hack. The exchange had halted withdrawals following the October 29 theft.

The incident ranks among the largest cryptocurrency heists tied to North Korea. The FBI’s public attribution places the loss squarely on Binance customers, whose funds were held on the exchange at the time of the hack.

The FBI’s statement did not describe how the intrusion was carried out or identify any individuals involved. It also did not say whether any of the stolen funds have been recovered.
