California startups have raised $385 billion in seed- through growth-stage funding so far in 2026, according to Crunchbase data. That figure exceeds the total raised by all U.S. startups in any single prior year on record, and it accounts for more than three-fourths of all U.S. startup funding this year. The state's companies have brought in more than double last year's total, with a couple of months still left in the year.
A large share of the money went to San Francisco-based AI developers OpenAI and Anthropic, whose financing rounds together made up more than half of California's statewide tally. Even excluding those two companies, California still captured a disproportionate share of the largest U.S. equity rounds. The state's portion of U.S. startup funding has climbed for three straight years, lifted by San Francisco AI unicorns as well as the broader Silicon Valley region and Southern California.
Among the next-largest California rounds this year was Waymo, which launched inside Google in 2009 and spun out as an independent company 10 years ago, picking up $16 billion in February. Databricks, now 13 years old, raised $5 billion in August and has raised over $30 billion in debt and equity funding to date. Prometheus, the physical AI startup co-founded and led by Jeff Bezos that launched last year, pulled in $12 billion this spring, and AI model startup Safe Superintelligence landed $5 billion in a Nvidia-led round this summer.
The windfall is not limited to late-stage and pre-IPO companies. California companies have secured nearly $62 billion in seed- and early-stage financings so far in 2026, roughly 57% of all U.S. funding at those stages. That total is far above prior years and appears to be a record.
One notable California-headquartered company this year was xAI, the generative AI startup known for its Grok chatbot and the parent company of X, formerly Twitter, which raised $20 billion. Today it is part of SpaceX, which is headquartered in Texas.
For U.S. startup investors, the figures point to California's continued dominance across technology cycles, with Silicon Valley in particular remaining home to many of the leading companies of the current era.
