Meta Platforms was founded in 2004 as Facebook and renamed in 2021. It is headquartered in Menlo Park, California.

It operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, a set of services with a combined user base measured in billions. Its Reality Labs division builds the Quest headsets and the Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Meta's Llama models are the most consequential openly available large language models, which puts the company at the centre of the argument over how open a frontier model should be.
