Microsoft released the Windows 11 KB5127648 and KB5126653 cumulative updates on Tuesday, delivering the October 2026 Patch Tuesday security patches, bug fixes, and new features to users of Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2. The updates address hundreds of security vulnerabilities discovered in previous months. Because the release carries the monthly security patches, it is mandatory for affected systems.
Users can obtain the update through Start > Settings > Windows Update by selecting Check for Updates, or by manually downloading and installing it from the Microsoft Update Catalog. This marks the tenth Patch Tuesday release of 2026. The release is based on 24H2, meaning that devices running 25H2 or 26H2 receive the same update with no exclusive or special changes, and the same fixes apply across those versions.
Among the user-facing additions, Microsoft is bringing new emojis to Windows 11 and correcting minor problems in File Explorer. The update adds support for Emoji 17.0, including new characters such as distorted face, fight cloud, and hairy creature, which can be inserted by pressing Windows + . to open the emoji panel. The company also refined the design of several existing emoji, including saluting face, face with peeking eye, goose, lotus, and kissing cat, for better consistency across platforms.
File Explorer receives several changes. The preview pane now handles files downloaded from the web differently: for HTML files, a new Preview anyway button lets users acknowledge a warning and preview the file, while non-HTML files such as PDFs are previewed automatically. File Explorer Home now preserves whether sections are expanded or collapsed, and thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane are more reliable. The Details pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find, and an issue that could clear the address bar contents when entering edit mode by clicking near its right side has been addressed.
A new Tips widget provides short guidance about Windows features. Users can add it to the Widgets board by opening the board, selecting Add widgets, and choosing Tips, or place it on the lock screen through Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. The update also includes a variety of improvements to desktop background experiences, covering the reliability of the Personalization > Background page in Settings, support for DIB image files as desktop backgrounds, slideshow transition reliability on newly created accounts, preview resolution when selecting a background, preview display for users with portrait mode monitors, reliability of processing wallpaper changes made in quick succession, and support for slideshow wallpapers with multiple desktops so the system will not automatically switch users back to Picture.
Microsoft also shipped Bluetooth enhancements. During voice calls, the Windows shell volume flyout now appears when a user adjusts the volume of a Bluetooth Classic Audio accessory through the controls on the accessory itself, providing visual feedback of the new volume level. The update additionally improves the accuracy of the connection state Windows displays for accessories that have disconnected from the PC.
