Microsoft has released the KB5124010 September 2026 non-security preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, delivering 46 changes that include Bluetooth fixes and a new option to remap the Copilot key. The update is optional and lets administrators and users test improvements, bug fixes, and new features before they reach general availability in next month's Patch Tuesday release. Unlike regular cumulative updates, monthly optional updates such as KB5124010 carry only quality improvements and do not include security fixes.
Among the additions is support for Emoji 17.0, a new accessibility setting called "Open apps maximized" that automatically maximizes app windows as they open, and a recovery remote management plug-in that extends Windows Recovery (WinRE) management capabilities. Microsoft also fixed an issue where the Bluetooth radio could be turned off while the toggle in Settings still displayed as on, along with a bug that could cause crashes with error code 0x139 during Bluetooth audio streaming. Microphone compatibility with certain Bluetooth Classic audio accessories was improved, as were reliability and performance with LE Audio accessories. Users can now remap the Copilot key through a new Windows 11 setting to act as the Right Ctrl or Context Menu key.
The update addresses a known issue that caused the built-in File History backup feature to fail on some systems after the September 2026 security updates were installed. It also removes PC-to-PC Migration, a tool that helped users transfer files, settings, and preferences to a new Windows device. Microsoft now recommends Windows Backup for migrating to a new PC through OneDrive. Microsoft also noted that KB5124010 is the final preview update for Windows 11 24H2, which reaches end of support in October 2026.
Installation can be done by opening Settings, selecting Windows Update, and choosing "Check for Updates." Because the release is optional, users must click "Download and install" unless the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option is already enabled, which prompts the operating system to install it automatically. The update can also be downloaded manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Once installed, the optional non-security update moves Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 devices to builds 26200.9550 and 26100.9550, respectively. Microsoft highlighted the changes above as some of the more important ones in the September 2026 preview release.
