Apple has announced a new Apple TV 4K, its first new model in four years, and preorders are now open exclusively through Apple. The device will be available starting Friday, November 13th. The company unveiled the product at its Welcome Home event.
The new model runs on Apple's A19 chip, replacing the A15 Bionic found in the now-discontinued 2022 version. It also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder and improved wireless connectivity compared with its predecessor. The device features built-in microphones, allowing users to talk to Siri AI.
Siri AI will operate in beta on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer models. The new Find My tracking feature works with the second-generation Siri remote and newer. The 2022 third-generation Apple TV 4K remains available refurbished through Apple for $209.
The new Apple TV 4K is priced at $299, twice what the 2022 model cost at launch before it rose to $249 a few months ago. Apple is currently the only retailer accepting preorders, though other retailers are likely to follow. The 2022 model offers Thread connectivity, ethernet, 128GB storage and HDMI 2.1.
Cameron Faulkner, an editor covering deals and gaming hardware at The Verge, noted that he recently purchased the 2022 Apple TV 4K and found it surprisingly speedy. He wrote that the A19 chip in the new model should keep it feeling responsive for longer than the 2022 version.
The launch is part of Apple's Welcome Home event, which also introduced the HomeView smart display and the Apple Home Collection. Those products include a video doorbell, smart lock and more. The Verge's coverage of the event includes hands-on reporting on the Apple Home Collection and a first look at the HomeView.
