Samsung device owners trying to decide whether to keep or replace their phones have a new set of dates to consider for Android software updates in 2026. The oldest Samsung handsets and tablets still receiving updates span both flagship and budget tiers, while some older models have already dropped off the list. Samsung has already released Android 17-based One UI 9 on newer devices, including the Galaxy Fold 8 series and the Galaxy Flip 8.

How long a Samsung device receives Android updates depends on its tier. Flagship phones get up to seven years of support, while mid-range devices get about five to six years. Budget models receive updates for up to four years. Security updates often continue well past a device's prime, but updates that bring meaningful software changes are less common, particularly for Samsung's affordable A series.

Among the Galaxy A phones, the A34 receives updates until March 2027. The A54 5G also gets Android updates until March 2027. The A73 is no longer supported as of April 2026. Longer support periods are a relatively new trend among smartphone makers, so older-generation phones do not share the longevity of newer models and may already be out of support.

Samsung tablets are also still receiving updates in 2026. The Galaxy Tab Active 5 gets Android updates until January 2028, and the Active 5 Pro is supported until 2033. Manufacturers do not notify users before ending software and security updates, so owners must look up their model online and verify support. Samsung maintains a security update list that owners can check, and a Settings app that shows no update in several months or years is a sign the device is likely unsupported.

The stakes for consumers are practical, especially in the US market where refurbished and budget devices are widely sold. A discounted refurbished model may lose access to updates within the year. Once security patches stop, the phone becomes vulnerable to new threats from hackers. Missing updates also cause apps designed for the latest OS versions to slowly become incompatible. Unusual popups and apps that appear without warning and consume internet data can indicate a hacked device, signs that a replacement may be needed.
