Rockstar Games may not take as long to release the next Grand Theft Auto game after GTA VI. Phil Hooker, Rockstar’s technical lead, said the engine, tools and team assembled during the making of GTA VI will let the studio work faster in the future. His comments appeared in a Bloomberg report on the development of GTA VI. GTA VI itself had a notably long production, taking eight years to complete.

That lengthy development created a 13-year gap between GTA VI and GTA V. The Bloomberg report notes that Rockstar once managed a much shorter turnaround, releasing Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City just one year apart. That was possible because the company already had the underlying framework ready for its next project. Hooker said he is confident Rockstar can build on GTA VI and expand sideways rather than upward to produce more compelling content.

GTA VI is set to launch on November 19th on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S. The Bloomberg report contained other details about the game as well. Rockstar has not announced a release date for any subsequent Grand Theft Auto title beyond GTA VI. The studio’s comments leave open the possibility of a shorter wait, but no timeline has been confirmed.

The development pace of major games has become a focus for players and publishers in the US market, where each new Grand Theft Auto release is a significant consumer event. A shorter gap between mainline entries could change how Rockstar plans its pipeline and how competing publishers schedule their own releases. It could also affect console owners who decide when to buy hardware based on the availability of major titles.

Rockstar’s ability to reuse its engine and tools is central to that possibility. Hooker’s remarks suggest the company sees GTA VI as a foundation rather than a one-off project. Whether that translates into a faster turnaround will depend on how the studio applies those resources after launch. For now, the only confirmed date remains November 19th for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S versions of GTA VI.

Additional coverage on the game has included reports that GTA VI will launch on PC in the first quarter of 2027, that it will feature in-game podcasts and at least six radio stations, and that leaked gameplay footage has continued to surface online. Those items remain part of the broader reporting around the title. Rockstar has not provided further detail on its plans beyond GTA VI.
