Uber will provide ChatGPT Work to its entire global workforce of about 30,000 employees, the company and OpenAI said Thursday, expanding a partnership between the ride-share giant and the ChatGPT developer.
ChatGPT Work, an enterprise-focused AI agent that corporate teams can deploy for various workflows, was introduced in July. Uber first tested the product with 1,000 employees earlier this year before scaling it to the full company.
That pilot reached workers across departments including finance, operations and product. Sumanth Sukumar, Uber's VP of engineering, said about 80% of the early adopters were non-engineers. According to Sukumar, those employees used the tool to analyze complex operational data to spot trends and develop recommendations, to localize training materials for different markets and languages, and to build personalized interactive dashboards for managing daily work.
Uber has not determined exactly how employees will use the tool going forward. Sukumar described the company's approach as making powerful AI tools available across Uber while giving teams room to experiment. He pointed to an effort earlier this year in which Uber paired 30 AI engineers with teams across the company and gave them two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs, saying those AI pods demonstrated the opportunity that arises when technical expertise is combined with a deep understanding of a particular job.
Uber did not disclose how much it is spending on the rollout. Sukumar said the company will track how employees use the technology, the workflows they develop and how it helps them work more effectively, and will evaluate those outcomes to guide how AI is deployed across the business. Uber said OpenAI worked closely with the company on integrating the chatbot.
The expansion comes as OpenAI works to grow its enterprise business in competition with Anthropic. Once known largely as a consumer brand, OpenAI has gained a following among business customers, while other AI companies have struggled to keep pace.
