Tim Cook's parting message: Apple is in the hands of a product builder

On his final day as Apple CEO, Tim Cook sent a farewell memo to employees endorsing his successor, John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. Cook said he is not leaving Apple but is stepping away from the chief executive role, and he praised Ternus for understanding what it takes to build products that change the world. Ternus’s promotion signals that Apple’s next era will emphasize hardware and product execution. Under Ternus, Apple shipped the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the lower-cost MacBook Neo, and AirPods with hearing health features, and he led the hardware engineering team across Apple’s full device lineup. The new leadership comes as hardware plays an increasing role in the AI era, not just in chips but in the devices used to run enterprise AI. Apple this year offered earlier releases of its new Mac models, the Mac mini and Mac Studio, compared with past years, driven by AI demand.

Cook’s memo focuses on gratitude rather than specifics about future challenges such as AI, services, regulation, China, or other issues ahead. He emphasized Apple’s culture, writing that employees share a belief that what they build matters and that they have the opportunity and responsibility to leave the world better than they found it. Cook also referenced Steve Jobs’s famous quote about leaving a dent in the universe, saying Apple makes that possible because of who employees are and what they believe, value, and see in the world.

Cook will remain at Apple as executive chairman and will continue to manage political relationships, including those with President Trump and the Chinese government. In a separate post on X, Cook wrote that he was sending love to the Apple community on his last day as CEO, saying his title changes tomorrow but his love for the community never will. He thanked the community for being a constant source of inspiration and expressed excitement for the next chapter.

In his longer memo, Cook told employees that he is most proud of what an annual report could never capture, calling Apple proof that culture triumphs over everything. He said the purpose that drives the company lived within each employee before they arrived and that together they have created something greater than any one person could have accomplished alone. Cook described handing the helm to Ternus as a comfort, saying few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way Ternus does.

Cook said he will miss the work in ways he can only begin to imagine but remains completely at peace with his decision. He thanked employees for the honor of being their CEO and encouraged them to continue being proud to be part of Apple. He closed by saying he looks forward to seeing employees in his new role at Apple Park and around the world.
