Bethesda has confirmed the title of its next Elder Scrolls game, announcing that the sixth main installment will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The name was revealed in a video lasting less than 10 minutes that celebrates 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios. Todd Howard, the studio's chief, made the announcement and described the occasion as the right moment to give the game its full title.

The company is holding back additional information for now. A press release on Xbox Wire about the name consists of nothing more than an image of the logo. No release window, platforms, or gameplay details were disclosed alongside the title. The confirmation arrives more than eight years after Bethesda first publicly acknowledged that a sixth Elder Scrolls game was in development.

The company had signaled the announcement was coming. Reporting last week indicated Bethesda planned to name the game in November, a period that also marks 15 years since the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Sentinel will take place in Hammerfell, a province in the Elder Scrolls universe that has previously appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online. According to the announcement, the game will be the first to focus on the history of the Elder Scrolls and will help uncover the secrets of mysterious ancient artifacts tied to that history.

The title confirmation gives players their first concrete piece of information about the project since the game's existence was announced. Bethesda framed the reveal around its anniversary, tying the naming of its flagship role-playing series to four decades of studio history.

For the US audience, the announcement concerns a franchise with a large stateside following, though Bethesda has not indicated when the game will arrive or which platforms will carry it. Xbox Wire, the Microsoft-owned publishing channel that carried the logo release, is the same outlet through which Bethesda has distributed prior announcements. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, whose 15th anniversary coincides with the naming, remains a benchmark release for the series in the US market.

Bethesda has not said whether further details will follow the name reveal.
