Stability AI, the company behind the AI image generator Stable Diffusion, has raised $76 million in a Series B funding round, bringing its total fundraising to $232 million. The announcement came Tuesday, with the company stating that the new capital includes investments from several major entertainment and gaming firms, specifically Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts. Two investment firms, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures, also joined the round.

The investor lineup is notable for its focus on content and distribution rather than a typical venture capital structure, reflecting the partnerships Stability AI has built in the entertainment sector. The company said it will use the funds to expand its creative production software suite and grow its professional services division. Stability AI currently offers a range of models designed for AI-driven music, video, and image generation.

Prem Akkaraju, who became CEO of Stability AI in 2024, described the funding as a validation of the company鈥檚 goal to use generative AI to support producers, musicians, and storytellers. Since its founding in 2019, Stability AI has signed multiple agreements to embed its AI tools into the creative workflows of entertainment companies. The company entered into partnerships with Universal Music and Electronic Arts last October, and with Warner Music last November, which involve co-developing the AI tools rather than merely licensing their outputs.

The company also faces an ongoing legal issue from its past. In 2023, co-founder Cyrus Hodes sued the company, alleging that the other co-founder, Emad Mostaque, had tricked him into selling his stake in the business. The case adds a layer of context to the company鈥檚 recent growth and its current leadership under Akkaraju.

For the US technology market, this funding round signals that major American music labels and game publishers are increasingly willing to invest directly in AI model developers, rather than only paying for their outputs. Stability AI鈥檚 focus on creative tools places it in a competitive segment of the generative AI industry, which is seeing growing interest from both startups and established tech firms. The involvement of AMD Ventures also ties the company to the broader US semiconductor and computing ecosystem.

The new capital arrives amid a period of rapid consolidation and investment in AI infrastructure and applications across the US. Stability AI鈥檚 pitch to entertainment companies appears to center on giving those firms a degree of control over how the AI models are shaped, a strategy that may differ from other AI developers that sell finished products. With the fresh funding, the company is positioned to deepen those co-development arrangements while expanding its professional services offerings.
