Spotify said Tuesday that iPhone users on iOS 27 can now ask Siri to play content through the streaming service without naming the app first. The change means listeners no longer have to tack the phrase on Spotify onto their spoken requests. The company said the simpler command applies to music and other content available through its apps.
The feature covers a range of requests rather than only songs. A user can ask for a specific track, album, podcast, or audiobook, or make a broader request such as play workout music. Siri can also be used to ask for a Spotify feature by name, including play my DJ.
Beyond playback, the voice control can handle requests tied to a listener's account and library. Spotify said users can seek personalized recommendations, resume podcasts, or search their library by voice. They can also create a Prompted Playlist using AI through Siri.
Spotify framed the removal of the extra phrase as a way to make hands-free listening feel more natural. In its view, listeners can concentrate on what they want to hear rather than on how to phrase a request so their preferred music app responds. The company said the feature works because Siri can now learn a user's music app preference.
If a listener consistently uses Spotify, Siri will route audio requests to that app automatically, according to Spotify. That preference is what allows the app name to be dropped from commands. The capability is available globally, with a set of conditions attached.
It requires an iPhone 15 Pro or a later model, and it is not available inside the European Union. Apple Intelligence must also be enabled in Settings for the feature to work. Spotify did not say when the capability might reach other devices or regions.
The update matters for US iPhone owners who use Spotify as their main audio app, since it removes a recurring step from voice requests made through Siri. Apple's assistant and Spotify's apps otherwise remain separate products, and the change depends on Siri recognizing Spotify as the listener's default choice. Spotify announced the change in a statement on Tuesday.
