Sony Interactive Entertainment has moved against a storefront that distributed free copies of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games to jailbroken PS5 consoles. The storefront, known as OVERDRIVE, hosted more than 1,600 titles as free downloads. According to reports, Sony's lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to the hackers behind the project, and the storefront is now closed.

The OVERDRIVE storefront appeared on GitHub on October 9, where it drew a relatively muted response at first. That changed after Edigax, a popular account that posts jailbreak installation tutorials, published a video on X demonstrating the installation on October 12. The video went viral, collecting more than 7.9 million views and over 600 comments.

Many of those commenters framed the project as payback for Sony's controversial push toward an all-digital marketplace. One commenter noted that the outcome was "only digital, as Sony wanted." Another post reacting to the project read, "This is Unbelievable: Play Has No Limits."

A day after the project went viral, Sony reportedly sent the developer a cease and desist letter and had the storefront shut down. No concrete sources have surfaced for the cease and desist. Regardless of the letter's provenance, the takedown did not last: within a day, two replacement projects appeared, one a fork of the original and the other a clone hosted under a different account.

The jailbreak community appears determined to keep the homebrew alive, both because of its large game library and as a form of protest against Sony's business practices. That dynamic makes it unlikely Sony will eliminate the problem permanently. If Sony takes down another copy, more are likely to appear in its place.

The dispute follows a busy stretch for the PS5 jailbreaking scene, which has accelerated since the release of the Relapse jailbreak on September 29. In the weeks since, developers have produced a wave of homebrew apps, including emulators, launchers, and streaming apps. Xbox Cloud Gaming now runs natively on the PS5. The free library of PS4 and PS5 games appears to be the culmination of that activity and the release that finally drew Sony's attention.
