Nvidia says its DLSS 5 technology has received an October update that doubles performance, cutting the model's size and the video memory it requires at 4K resolution. According to the company, the new model achieves the same visual quality as the September version while using half the GPU overhead, a change that can raise frame rates by as much as 1.4x. The update is aimed at the RTX 50-series GPUs and the rest of the hardware that supports the upscaling technology.
The performance gain comes from what Nvidia describes as systematic pipeline optimizations paired with refinements to the neural model. The company says the October release shrinks the DLSS 5 model's parameter count by nearly a quarter, bringing it to 118 million parameters. Nvidia also reports a 20 percent reduction in VRAM usage at 4K. Because the transformation DLSS applies to games, including lighting and other effects, runs at higher frame rates or more demanding settings under the faster model.
The first game to ship with the new model is NBA 2K27, which arrives on October 16. Nvidia has also confirmed that DLSS 5 will come to Hogwarts Legacy next month. Support for the technology remains on RTX 50-series GPUs, and it continues to be offered through GeForce NOW and the new RTX Spark lineup.
Alongside the DLSS 5 update, Nvidia is introducing a faster Performance Mode for Frame Generation on RTX 50-series and RTX 40-series GPUs as well as RTX Spark laptops. The company says a new Preset C mode replaces the AI model previously used to calculate optical flow for elements such as user interfaces and ray-traced effects. That algorithm is faster and lighter, and it boosts DLSS Frame Generation, MFG, and Dynamic MFG. Nvidia measures the gain at 35 percent on the RTX 5060.
The announcements matter for US gamers and PC builders weighing upgrades, because lower VRAM use at 4K and lighter frame generation overhead can extend the useful life of existing cards. The news also lands across three product lines Nvidia is promoting domestically and through its cloud gaming service.
