A trailer for a Mass Effect game appeared on Reddit today, one day after EA shut down BioWare and canceled the studio’s new Mass Effect title in development. The video is titled Mass Effect: Universe and carries a message at its start stating that it uses in-engine footage and pre-production assets.

The trailer centers on an ex-soldier speaking with a mysterious Asari who approaches him at a bar. It also shows a flashback to a fight styled after the gameplay of the original trilogy, and it mixes human and alien species in shared settings, brief action cuts and a cameo from a prominent character from the original trilogy. The video closes on the title Mass Effect: Universe.

The trailer’s legitimacy has been supported by outside outlets. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier described it as a real trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday, and IGN said it has verified the trailer is legitimate.

The cancellation follows EA’s shutdown of BioWare yesterday, which ended development of the studio’s new Mass Effect game. The trailer’s appearance on Reddit today put footage of that canceled project in front of the public despite the studio’s closure.

The Mass Effect franchise may still continue elsewhere. Amazon is reportedly still working on its Mass Effect TV show for Prime Video, suggesting more stories from the franchise could still reach audiences.

The trailer’s circulation rests on a Reddit post and on verification by Bloomberg and IGN rather than on any release from EA or BioWare. The video’s own opening message limits what it represents, labeling its footage as in-engine and its assets as pre-production.
