The name "4K" is often assumed to be a marketing invention, but it actually has a technical basis that predates consumer televisions. The term originated with the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) standard, which named the format for its horizontal resolution of roughly 4,000 pixels. However, the 4K used in home entertainment is not the same pixel count as the cinema standard; consumer 4K displays use a resolution of 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, while movie theater resolutions are slightly wider to match their screens and allow for easier cropping.
For home displays, the 4K name has a different logical connection: it refers to the fact that this resolution is exactly four times the size of 1080p, which uses a 1,920 by 1,080 pixel grid. The horizontal and vertical pixel counts of 4K are each double that of 1080p. The name 2160p also exists and follows the older convention of using the vertical pixel count, as seen with 480p, 720p, and 1080p, but 4K is more commonly used because it is simpler for marketing purposes.
The "p" in these resolutions stands for "progressive," which draws the entire image at once, as opposed to the older interlaced "i" standards that alternated drawing odd and even rows to save bandwidth. Another resolution, QHD or 1440p, sits between 1080p and 4K at 2,560 by 1,440 pixels. Its "quad" name comes from being four times the size of 720p, while 4K is four times the size of 1080p. This middle format is not a standard for video sources and appears mainly in computer monitors, where it offers a balance for gaming.
Even though 4K televisions are common and affordable, much of the content viewed on them is not actually rendered at that resolution. Most broadcast TV remains at 720p or 1080i, and several streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video charge extra for 4K access. Devices connected to a TV also need to support the format; the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 can output 4K, though some games may drop the resolution in performance modes that favor frame rate. A 4K Blu-ray player and discs are needed for physical media, and an HDMI 2.0 cable is the minimum for 4K output, with HDMI 2.1 enabling higher frame rates.
Some labeled 4K content is upscaled, meaning the TV fills in missing pixels from lower-resolution material to fit the screen, whereas true 4K was recorded or rendered natively at that resolution and offers better quality. As for 8K, which uses a 7,680 by 4,320 resolution, there are currently no real 8K movies, games, or videos, and the few available televisions are extremely expensive and have not gained traction. The lack of adoption is partly due to data demands and partly because the human eye cannot perceive the extra detail at typical viewing distances, as more pixels per degree of vision exceed what the eye can process.
