Bloomberg’s report suggests the split is tied to a strategic move toward a biannual release cadence, similar to how Samsung spaces out its Galaxy and foldable launches. David Naranjo, associate director at Counterpoint Research, said that Apple will likely reveal the foldable iPhone on September 9 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, with base model announcements delayed until spring 2027. He described the staggered launch as a notable change emphasizing premiumization. The exact reasons for the potential delay remain unclear, though manufacturing restrictions or RAM shortages are possible factors.

The rumored iPhone Ultra would be Apple’s first foldable phone, and it may go up for preorder with the Pro models but ship later, possibly due to supply chain issues with the hinge and displays. Historically, when Apple adds a new model to the lineup, such as the iPhone 12 Mini or iPhone 14 Plus, it has released about a month after the other devices. The iPhone Air, however, was an exception. For the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2, rumors point to a much later release, possibly aligning with Apple’s budget-focused E series. The iPhone E line has historically launched the following spring, as did the SE series before it. The upcoming budget model, likely called the iPhone 18E, would be a pared-down version of the regular iPhone, offering core features without the extras. The iPhone 17E launched at $599, but whether the 18E will see a similar price increase remains uncertain.

The iPhone 17E was announced in March and hit stores within a week, and if that pattern holds, the iPhone 18E could arrive in early to mid-March 2027. It may not debut alone, though, as the standard iPhone 18 could also appear at that time.
