Apple Wallet in iOS 27 can now split a restaurant bill using a camera image of a receipt, part of a set of Wallet features the company previewed at its annual software event, WWDC, in June and is now rolling out. The bill-splitting tool relies on Apple Intelligence to make the individual items on a receipt selectable, so a user can mark what is theirs and what is not, then see what is owed.

The process begins with the new Siri mode in the Camera app. When the lens is pointed at a receipt, a prompt for Split Bill With Apple Cash appears, and the user can search through contacts for people to split the check with. Those people need to be able to pay with Apple Cash. Apple Wallet then displays a list of the items ordered, and the user selects from that list and chooses how the bill is divided and how much to tip. Apple Wallet cannot compel anyone to pay.

Apple also introduced other Wallet features in iOS 27, including the ability to create custom Wallet items from scanned physical cards or from scratch, and the ability to view recurring payments for Apple Card holders. To add an item, a user taps the plus icon at the top to add something new, then can scan a debit, credit, transit or other type of ID card, or choose Create a Pass to work from a business card. Details of a custom card can be imported from a scan and edited, or entered manually, and Apple Wallet offers several templates for custom items along with adjustable color or background. Item details can be edited later, and newer Apple Watch models should be able to pin these custom digital passes using the Smart Stack feature.

CNET Senior Writer and iOS features expert Zachary McAuliffe said the custom card feature has already worked well for him. He said he digitized his gym membership card and that it has worked great, adding that he had worried the scanner would not pick up his iPhone screen but found it picked up the screen better than his old card. He also said he appreciates the space it saves on his already crowded keyring.

To view recurring payments on an Apple Card, a user taps the Card in Wallet and selects the option from the menu using the three dots at the top right. Apple also announced new features for developers geared to Apple Wallet, including the ability to make posters for multiticket events and adding order tracking for retail apps using Apple Intelligence. Users need their device to be running iOS 27 to take advantage of some of the new Wallet features, and more are likely to roll out as Apple continues releasing updates to its new operating system.
