Instagram is updating its rules for accounts that feature AI-generated personas, requiring these profiles to carry a new "AI-generated profile" label that makes clear the account is not a real human. According to the company, accounts that fail to display this label will have their reach reduced on the platform. The change applies to profiles that regularly feature AI-generated people, a category that has grown rapidly as the technology has become more advanced. The new tag replaces an older, optional "AI creator" label that Instagram previously used as a catch-all for profiles with AI content.

The policy shift comes as social media users have grown increasingly frustrated with the flood of AI-generated material, sometimes called "AI slop," across platforms. While other companies have taken steps to reduce the prominence of such content, Meta has generally encouraged users to create it and has done little to discourage AI posts. The new labeling requirement is not a broad crackdown on AI slop, but rather a targeted rule for a type of content that can be especially misleading. The in-app description for the new designation specifically says it is meant for profiles that feature an AI-generated person.

The move responds to a rise in fake AI influencers, which have drawn scrutiny from major news outlets. A recent investigation by The Guardian uncovered a wave of AI-generated influencers promoting apps and brands. Separately, The New York Times found hundreds of AI "wellness" influencers, including some who claimed to be doctors. While much of this content may not explicitly break Meta’s rules, it has raised concerns about misinformation spreading through the platform.

An Instagram spokesperson said the company has heard from its community that users do not like encountering a profile that appears human, only to later discover that the person featured is AI-generated. The spokesperson added that accounts featuring AI humans that do not use the label may soon see limits on their reach. The company did not specify a timeline for when the restrictions would begin. Creators who believe they have been wrongly penalized will be able to appeal through Instagram’s Account Status dashboard.

For U.S. users, the change affects a growing segment of the influencer economy, where AI-generated personas have become a visible presence in brand deals and wellness advice. The label requirement offers a way to distinguish these accounts from human creators, though it does not remove them from the platform. Instagram’s approach stops short of banning AI personas outright, instead focusing on transparency. The company’s decision reflects a broader debate about how to handle AI content as it becomes harder to distinguish from reality.
