Insta360 has introduced the Insta360 Mic, a less expensive alternative to its wireless Mic Pro system, giving content creators a lower-priced option that keeps most of the Pro model’s features. The new microphone is positioned between the Mic Pro, which launched last May with built-in color E Ink screens and a three-microphone array, and the budget-friendly Mic Air, which uses smaller transmitters without screens. The Insta360 Mic is available to US buyers at $249.99 for a bundle that includes two microphone transmitters, one wireless receiver and a charging case, compared with $329.99 for the comparable Mic Pro kit.
Insta360 also sells the transmitters individually, since they can connect directly to smartphones and to several of the company’s cameras, including the X6, X5 and Luna Ultra, over Bluetooth. A single Mic Pro transmitter costs $99.99, while a single Insta360 Mic transmitter costs $79.99. The design and functionality of the Insta360 Mic closely mirror the Mic Pro, including the same 1.22-inch, six-color E Ink display on the front that can be customized with logos, photos or solid colors to help the microphone blend into clothing.
The transmitters offer a range of up to 400 meters when paired with Insta360’s wireless receiver, which connects to professional cameras, laptops or other recording devices through a built-in USB-C connector. The system also includes AI-powered noise canceling to reduce background noise, along with automatic gain control modes that adjust recording levels on the fly to help prevent clipping when sound suddenly gets too loud.
The main trade-off for buyers choosing the cheaper model is that its transmitters carry a single microphone rather than the Mic Pro’s triple mic array, so omnidirectional is the only pickup pattern available. That simpler hardware makes the transmitters slightly lighter than the Mic Pro’s, at 19.4 grams compared with 19.7 grams. Battery life also rises from up to 10 hours on the Mic Pro to up to 13 hours on the Insta360 Mic, and the charging case can extend total use to 34 hours.
Storage differs as well. The Mic Pro transmitters include 32GB of built-in storage for backup recording, while the Insta360 Mic transmitters have no built-in storage. Owners can still enable backup recording by inserting a microSD card into each transmitter, an option that allows for more than the Mic Pro’s 32GB of storage.
