Apple account holders who change their country or region settings can protect purchases and personal data by taking several steps beforehand, according to guidance from Apple and reporting by Engadget. The company recommends re-downloading purchased apps, music, streaming video and books to a user's devices before any change, because content is not universally viewable in every region. Content that becomes inaccessible after a country change may not be transferable between devices, so users should secure what they want first.

A current payment method is also required, as Apple asks account holders to add a new one before confirming a country change. Apple's support page lists which payment methods are available for a given location. Users who cannot add their new payment method may need to wait until they are physically in the new country or region, where they can create a new Apple Account under the new location settings. Apple now permits digital purchases to be transferred between accounts, though some limitations remain.

Apple account holders should spend any remaining store balance on App Store products or Apple services before switching. In some countries, those balances can be used on products or accessories. A balance too small to buy anything can be cleared by contacting Apple Support. Users can check their balance in the App Store by tapping their photo or initials, where funds appear under their name.

Subscriptions are another obstacle, since many do not allow membership to continue through a country change. Apple typically allows a subscription to be canceled when it blocks a country or region change. On an Apple device, cancellations are handled through Settings, then the user's name, then Subscriptions, where the subscription is selected and Cancel Subscription is tapped. A red expiration message indicates the subscription has already ended.

Pending transactions should be completed before any account change. Changing settings too early can cost users access to select memberships, pre-orders, Season Passes and movie rentals. A pre-order that has not yet become available can be canceled in the App Store by selecting the account and opening the Pre-orders menu under Subscriptions. Members of a Family Sharing plan may be unable to change countries at all and must leave the group first. Apple advises working through these settings before contacting support.

The change itself can be made in several places. On a Mac, users open the Apple Music or Apple TV app, go to Account Settings from the Account section of the menu bar, sign in, click Country/Region, choose the new residence, accept the Terms & Conditions and enter payment and billing details. On a Windows PC, the same apps offer View My Account and Change Country or Region from the name at the bottom of the sidebar. The change can also be made online at account.apple.com under Personal Information, then Country/Region.

Some features may be unavailable after a move. Engadget reported that Siri AI will not be rolled out to European customers amid an ongoing legal battle with the EU. Such situations are not necessarily permanent: in China, Apple overcame a prolonged regulatory stalemate to bring Apple Intelligence to the country. Online resources such as Apple Feature Map can help users determine which features are available in a new region.
