Canceling a ChatGPT subscription stops the recurring billing, but it does not delete an OpenAI account or remove existing chats. A paid plan is best suited for users who regularly hit the Free tier’s limits or depend on higher-tier tools, and when that is no longer the case, the monthly cost becomes harder to justify. OpenAI offers ChatGPT Go, a lower-cost paid tier available in every country where ChatGPT is supported, as an alternative for those who want to spend less without dropping paid access entirely.

The decision to cancel may also stem from policy concerns. After OpenAI signed a February 2026 agreement with the US Department of Defense to deploy its models on the department’s classified network, Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch showed US ChatGPT app uninstalls jumped 295 percent day over day. OpenAI later amended the agreement to explicitly prohibit domestic surveillance of US persons and stated its services would not be used by Defense Department intelligence agencies such as the NSA without a new agreement. For a personal subscription purchased on chatgpt.com, the cancellation process requires logging in, selecting the profile icon, opening Settings, choosing Billing, and selecting Cancel under the Cancel plan option. OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid an additional charge. Canceling the subscription stops future renewals but leaves standard chats saved to the account until they are deleted manually.

Whether chats are used for model training is controlled separately. Under Settings and Data Controls, turning off the Improve the model for everyone option prevents new conversations from being used to improve OpenAI’s models while keeping those conversations in the user’s history. Temporary Chats offer another option for individual conversations, as they do not appear in history or get used to improve the models, though OpenAI says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Deleting the OpenAI account is a separate action from canceling the subscription. Account deletion is permanent, blocks access to OpenAI services, and triggers deletion of account data within 30 days, aside from limited information OpenAI may retain where required or permitted by law. Users billed through Apple or Google must cancel the subscription via the relevant app store before deleting the account.

Canceling does not remove paid features immediately. OpenAI states the cancellation becomes effective the day after the next billing date, so users can continue using the paid plan through the current billing period. Customers in the EU, UK, and Turkey are eligible for a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase. After the paid period ends, the account remains available with any chats the user has not deleted, and the subscription stops without forcing a decision on whether to keep using ChatGPT.
