Google is directing Android users in Canada to install pending software updates and restart their phones to correct wrong clock times tied to new time zone laws taking effect Nov 1. The guidance, posted to the Android community help forums, applies to Canadians whose devices are showing an incorrect time as a result of the changes. Google says updates should come from both the phone's manufacturer and Google itself.

If the time or time zone is still wrong after updating and restarting, Google offers a second option: turning on location-based time zone detection. Users can search for "Date and Time" in Android's settings and enable both the "Automatic time zone" and "Use location for time zone" options. That lets the device set its zone from where it is located rather than relying on stored rules.

As a last resort, Google suggests switching off "Automatic time zone" detection in Android's settings and picking a time zone by hand that matches the correct time offset for the region. That manual step bypasses the automatic system entirely for users who cannot get the right time any other way.

The problem stems from how daylight saving time is handled in Canada, where rules differ from province to province and even within smaller regions. That patchwork can make it hard for devices to keep up with changes in a timely manner, leaving some phones showing the wrong time when clocks do not turn back as expected.

Google's fix applies to Canada, but the underlying issue has a US angle. Because Canada's rules vary by province and locality, coordinating updates is difficult, and the source notes it would potentially be less of an issue in the US if the entire country adopts permanent daylight saving time all at once. No US policy change has been enacted in the source account.

The post was reported by Andrew Liszewski. Google's advice covers three steps in order: apply all pending updates from the manufacturer and Google and restart, enable location-based time zone detection, or set the time zone manually.
