Ember has released the third generation of its temperature-controlled smart mug, the Ember Mug 3, adding on-mug temperature controls and other upgrades to a product line the company first launched in 2016. The mug is aimed at coffee and tea drinkers who want their drinks to stay at a chosen temperature rather than cooling while they are distracted or away from their desks. It is available through Ember's website, Target and Amazon.

The most significant change in the Mug 3 is that users no longer need the Ember app to change the temperature of their drink. A button on the bottom of the mug cycles through five preset temperatures, starting at 125 degrees Fahrenheit, with each press raising the temperature by five degrees up to a maximum of 145 degrees. Ember says the on-mug control is also a welcome change for users who have reported connectivity or pairing issues with the Ember app. The button's placement drew a complaint during testing, since reaching it requires tilting a mug full of hot liquid and pressing firmly.

The Ember app remains available for customization. After pairing the mug with a phone over Bluetooth, users can choose presets based on what they are drinking, with Ember recommending 136 degrees Fahrenheit for black coffee, 132 degrees for green tea and 142 degrees for lemon water. Users can also create their own temperature presets. The mug keeps a drink at its desired temperature for up to three hours on a single charge.

Other upgrades include a sliding lid intended to help prevent spills. The Mug 3 is the first mug in Ember's lineup to be top-rack dishwasher-safe, though it is not microwave-safe.

The Ember Mug 3 comes in two sizes. The 10-ounce model costs $129 and is available in black, white and stainless steel. The 14-ounce version costs $149 and comes in eight colors: sage green, lavender, powder blue, salt blue, sandstone, white, black and matcha green.

Ember also introduced the Tumbler 2, which replaces both the Travel Mug 2 and the original Tumbler in its lineup. The 16-ounce tumbler has a slimmer, taller design intended to fit standard car cup holders and is available in black for $179. The Travel Mug 2 will remain available until supplies run out.
