Plug-in solar kits, long popular in Europe as a way to offset household electricity costs, are gaining legal ground across the US, opening the market to renters and budget-conscious consumers. The systems, sometimes called balcony solar, typically consist of solar panels and a microinverter that plugs directly into a standard wall outlet, feeding solar power into the home鈥檚 electrical grid without the need for a contractor or utility preapproval. While a traditional rooftop solar installation can start around $15,000, these plug-in kits start at roughly $300, and optional battery storage units begin near $500 for a small capacity or $1,500 for a larger one.
The practice has been safe and effective in Europe for years, with an estimated 1.5 million households in Germany alone using such systems. Their popularity there has been driven by high oil and gas prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ongoing conflict involving the US and Iran, as well as record-low global prices for solar panels and batteries. US consumers face higher costs due to tariffs on panels and batteries and the elimination of solar tax credits, but that has not stopped the category from gaining momentum.
Historically, US utility regulations treated small plug-in units like large rooftop arrays, requiring extensive approvals. That is changing as more than a dozen states have passed laws or introduced bills to legalize plug-in solar deployment. The rules generally allow qualifying systems to be installed without utility preapproval, provided they meet safety standards, avoid overloading circuits, and shut down during power outages to protect line workers. Plug-in solar is now legal in Virginia, Maine, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire, following Utah鈥檚 pioneering reclassification of the devices as small household appliances last year. Legislation is awaiting a governor鈥檚 signature in California and New York, and several other states have introduced bills.
In Europe, only Sweden and Hungary still prohibit plug-in solar devices among the 27 EU member states. The author of the report, who lives in the Netherlands, said a modest 400W system on a rooftop deck produced 709kWh over 21 months, saving about $260 and nearly offsetting the kit鈥檚 purchase price. That system plugs into a larger power station, which took longer to offset, but the battery also provides value for off-grid living. European systems can feed up to 800W into a home, while US states typically support up to 1200W.
The legal shifts have attracted attention from home energy companies, including EcoFlow, Bluetti, and Anker, which are marketing modular plug-in solar systems. These systems are designed to be expanded over time, from entry-level generation to a larger whole-home energy setup. Recent product launches include EcoFlow鈥檚 Stream 2 series and Bluetti鈥檚 Balco series. The report鈥檚 author said plug-in solar is not a replacement for utility-scale farms or large rooftop arrays, but it fills a lower-cost entry point for the clean energy transition, and that the two-year-old kit has already nearly paid for itself.
