Discord released an update today that fixes how Markdown previews appear on the platform, with uploaded files now displaying correctly rather than showing what the company described as a bunch of symbols.
Discord said that when a user uploads a Markdown (.md) file, the file will now be rendered cleanly and neatly. The company said the improved display covers tables, formatting and similar elements. The change targets a common frustration for users who share Markdown documents through the service.
The update may matter beyond casual sharing. Large language models and AI agents frequently depend on Markdown files to carry instructions and context, so cleaner previews could help people who share information about AI projects on Discord. The company framed the feature as useful for everyday exchanges of README files among friends as well.
Discord's update also includes changes to server and channel organization. Users can now right-click an icon in the sidebar and use a new Move to feature to reorganize their servers and channels. In addition, Discord Nitro members can now upload files as large as 1GB.
The Markdown fix arrives as other technology companies work on their own Markdown support. Google recently began allowing users to edit Markdown files directly in Docs without converting them to the Docs format first.
Discord's changes were announced in a post from the company. The update is available today, according to Discord. The company did not provide further details beyond its announcement.
Markdown is a lightweight formatting language that uses plain-text symbols to indicate structure such as tables and emphasis. When such files are displayed without proper rendering, those symbols remain visible instead of being converted into formatted text. Discord's update addresses that display issue for uploaded files.
