Dell has introduced a new laptop aimed at students that the company positions as a more affordable alternative to its premium XPS line. The Dell 14S, announced at the IFA 2026 trade show, is designed to sit below the recently launched XPS 13 in the company鈥檚 lineup. The move comes as many other laptop makers continue to raise prices, making budget-friendly options increasingly scarce in the US market. Dell鈥檚 new model is intended to fill that gap with a lower starting price point.

The 14S features an aluminum chassis and is available in four colors: linen, dusty rose, washed denim, and velvet green. This is a significantly wider range of color options than the XPS 13 offers. The base configuration includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, though buyers can upgrade to 16GB of RAM and either a 512GB or 1TB solid-state drive. The laptop is not as thin or light as the XPS 13, but it does include a 3.5mm audio jack, a feature absent from the pricier model.

For connectivity, the 14S provides two USB-C ports that support DisplayPort and Power Delivery, alongside an HDMI 1.4 port and the aforementioned headphone jack. Display choices are limited to non-touch panels: a 300-nit screen with a 1920 by 1200 resolution at a 60Hz refresh rate, or a brighter 450-nit panel with a 2880 by 1800 resolution at 120Hz. The laptop also comes with a 1080p webcam that supports Windows Hello face unlock for biometric login.

Dell claims the 14S can deliver up to 23 hours of battery life when streaming Netflix. Under the hood, the laptop will be powered by either an Intel Core 5 320 or an Intel Core 7 350 processor. Notably, the 14S will not offer the higher-end Intel Panther Lake chip options that the XPS 13 is expected to support in the near future. This keeps the 14S firmly in the mid-range performance tier.

The company has not yet disclosed the exact price for the 14S, with pricing listed as to be determined. During a virtual briefing, Dell representatives indicated that the cost will be close to the XPS 13鈥檚 $700 starting price but slightly more accessible. That would make the 14S a key contender for US students and budget-conscious buyers who have seen laptop prices climb across the industry. Actual pricing is expected to be announced closer to the laptop鈥檚 release later this fall.
